Target Archery: Frequently Asked Questions
- What is target archery? Target archery is a type of archery in which archers shoot arrows at stationary, round, multicolored bull’s-eye targets from set distances. The archer’s goal is to focus on precision and score points for hitting specific rings.
- Is target archery an Olympic sport? Yes, target archery is featured in the Olympics and Paralympics. Olympic archers use equipment like recurve, compound, barebow, and longbows. Olympic archery events include indoor (18m) and outdoor (up to 90m) formats. They emphasize consistent form and accuracy over speed or penetration, awarding higher scores for shots closer to the center.
- Is archery a family-friendly activity? Yes, archery can be fun and safe for the whole family. Our courses are appropriate for ages 8 and up. Feel free to ask any questions you have about safety before or during your target archery course. We’re happy to help.
- Why do hobbyists love target archery? Target archery is a great opportunity to build strength and practice a variety of skills. Archery can teach discipline, focus, and attention, as well as balance, dexterity, core strength, and more. Sometimes, modifications are made to equipment for people with disabilities or mobility issues.
- What do “Level 2” and “Level 3” mean in target archery instruction? In target archery, “Level 2” and “Level 3” are classifications used by the sport’s governing bodies and associations to categorize an archer’s skill. Their classification is based on scores achieved in specific rounds. Archery “levels” aren’t different types of archery; they’re different skill tiers in the same discipline. The main differences are: the score required to achieve each level, the distances shot, and the type of competition where scores can be officially registered.
- What’s the benefit of taking classes with a certified archery instructor? Certified target archery instructors are committed to safety and to giving the highest quality instruction possible. Even if you’re a first-timer, it’s a good feeling to know you’re getting the same calibre of instruction a dedicated archer would get. Plus, you never know which sport might become your new favorite. It’s never a bad idea to start on a strong foundation.
